Health & Wellbeing

Reading sleep, hydration, caffeine and body-weight metrics without over-trusting a single number.

Sleep: total and regularity both matter

Consistency matters as much as duration. Going to bed and waking at wildly different times leaves you less alert during the day even when total sleep is adequate. Sleep cycles through light, deep and REM stages, and waking near the end of a cycle tends to feel better than waking mid-cycle.

Hydration

Requirements vary with body size, activity, temperature and diet, so a single universal figure does not apply well. Water in food and other drinks counts toward the total. Thirst appears only after mild dehydration has begun, so drinking regularly rather than waiting for thirst helps.

Caffeine half-life

Caffeine clears on a timescale of hours, so a good portion of a late-afternoon coffee is still present at bedtime. Sensitivity varies widely between people, but if falling asleep has become difficult, moving your last intake earlier is one of the easier changes to test.

  • Tea, energy drinks and chocolate contain caffeine too
  • The same drink varies by size and by bean
  • Watch both daily total and time of last intake

Reading body-weight metrics

BMI uses only height and weight. That makes it useful for population statistics but blind to body composition β€” muscular people can register as high, and someone at a normal weight can still carry high body fat. Read it alongside waist measurement, activity level and lab results rather than on its own.
